The 1930's saw the first use of 12 string acoustic guitars, but the real renaissance period began in the 1960s when groups including the Searchers and also the Byrds who held it in the forefront for more than a decade. during the 80's the twelve string guitar was used by musicians including Robert Smith of The Cure, Guns and Rose,XTC, R.E.M., and, obviously, Johnny Marr from The Smiths.
